Dupont Lacquer Expertise

UNIQUE EXPERTISE

S.T. DUPONT has mastered the Art of Lacquer since 1935.

A UNIQUE STORY...

In 1935, brothers Lucien & André-Tissot Dupont were searching for a craftsman to work on gold plating. However, a typing error appeared in the advertisement. In French, the word “Plaqueur” got transformed into “Laqueur”. That is how the Art of Lacquer, which became one of the Maison’s major assets, was introduced.

The first Master Lacquerer, George Novossiltzeff, learnt his profession in the workshop of Jean Dunand, a Swiss French artist and sculptor who was renowned for his lacquer screens during the Art Deco period. Originally, a lacquerer for panels for the ocean liner, Normandie, “Novos”, as he was later called, began to experiment with this ancient art to apply lacquer on metal objects when he joined Maison S.T. Dupont. Later, his successors transformed his techniques into authentic and unique expertise.

WHAT IS THE COMPOSITION OF S.T. DUPONT LACQUERS?

Over the years, the drive for perfection and innovation, as well as carefully monitored research on different types of lacquer, led to what we know today as S.T. Dupont lacquers.

S.T. Dupont lacquers are secret concoctions made of materials including natural resins sourced from Japan, Taiwan and various parts of Asia or resins that are researched & developed in a strictly controlled environment.

BENEFITS OF S.T. DUPONT LACQUERS

S.T. Dupont lacquers undergo several quality control and resistance tests to ensure the highest quality standards. In addition, these lacquers are extremely durable to guarantee products that will last for generations.

These lacquers are applied in several phases and are left to dry up to several days to guarantee a perfectly even coating, an ultra-shiny effect and a soft touch on the products.

Most importantly, the use of these lacquers allows the Maison to explore an unlimited choice of colours and decorations: Sunburst, intense vivid shades, graduations, guilloche under the lacquer and delicate glitter applications.

All pieces are finished by hand, combining craftsmanship & modern technology, to create ultimate pieces of luxury.

Today all S.T. Dupont products, which are adorned with S.T. Dupont lacquer, are engraved with a leaf symbolising the expertise of the Maison.
