The Art of Lacquer: the alchemy of gesture and time
Preserving the aura of mystery and prestige that forged its legend, S.T. Dupont today unveils a vibrant tribute to one of its most fascinating crafts: The Art of Lacquer. A rare heritage, absolute mastery of gesture, a quest for excellence… The Maison perpetuates a precious tradition that elevates its creations to the status of icons.
Master Lacquerers: guardians of a precious secret
It all began in 1935, when Georges Novossiltzeff, the Maison’s first Master Lacquerer, introduced Chinese lacquer into the S.T. Dupont workshops. This ancestral art, passed down by Asian masters, requires infinite patience, a steady hand, and a keen sense of perfection.
From this meeting between Eastern tradition and French refinement was born a singular alchemy: the S.T. Dupont lacquers, renowned for their depth, incomparable brilliance, and exceptional resistance.
Each shade is the result of meticulous craftsmanship:
- selection of natural resins sourced from Asia,
- development of exclusive resins in controlled environments,
- a process of application, drying, and polishing repeated dozens of times,
- absolute mastery of technique to create colors of rare intensity.
Still today, the Master Lacquerers of Faverges perpetuate this exceptional know-how. Each piece adorned with lacquer bears, discreetly, the engraved leaf, symbol of the Maison’s craftsmanship.
Where audacity meets tradition
The Art of Lacquer at S.T. Dupont never ceases to evolve. Driven by a passion for the material, artisans explore new resins, imagine unprecedented pigments, and push the limits of traditional gestures.
This mastery allows for an infinite palette of shades, reflections, and decorations — from the emblematic deep black to vibrant reds, as well as contemporary tones inspired by art, nature, and travel.
Each creation becomes a manifesto: a testament to a Maison that has never ceased to unite heritage with innovation.
Everyday objects turned into works of art
Whether on a lighter, a pen, an accessory, or a piece of leather goods, lacquer offers a brilliance that time does not fade but rather enhances.
Each applied layer — sometimes twenty or thirty — contributes to the birth of a unique object, where light reflects with an almost living depth.
To own an S.T. Dupont lacquered piece is to hold a fragment of this legend, shaped by hand, patiently, in the Savoyard workshops.
The Art of Lacquer: eternity as legacy
More than a craft, the Art of Lacquer is a philosophy. It expresses the patience, precision, and respect for artisan gestures that have animated the Maison since 1872.
Today, S.T. Dupont continues to elevate this art to new horizons, exploring materials, magnifying colors, and creating pieces with a unique emotional resonance.
Thus continues the legend: that of a Maison that transforms matter into light, and tradition into eternity.
